Douwe Egberts: more impact on more people

Douwe Egberts and its parent company Sara Lee are committed to greater sustainability throughout the coffee sector. This is why Douwe Egberts is developing a range of activities aimed at improving the social and economical conditions of coffee farmers and the natural environment as well the quality of the coffee itself.

Douwe Egberts believes a globally accepted code of conduct and monitoring system is the best way of achieving a fully sustainable coffee sector. Such a code, supported by the entire coffee sector, would encompass social, ecological and economic criteria for the production and processing of sustainable coffee in the mainstream market (90% of the total coffee market).

Common Code for the Coffee Community and UTZ CERTIFIED
Douwe Egberts is focusing its efforts on two global initiatives: 4C (the Common Code for the Coffee Community), a global alliance of coffee roasters, trade organisations, coffee producing countries and civil society organisations) and UTZ CERTIFIED.
We are committed to improving the living standard of every individual that deals with our company (all stakeholders), in line with our social, ecological and economic responsibilities.

Why we choose to work with UTZ CERTIFIED
Douwe Egberts’ partnership with UTZ CERTIFIED is motivated by its organisational model, which focuses squarely on the mainstream coffee market (almost 90% of the total market).
The UTZ CERTIFIED program encompasses all coffee growing countries, coffee types and qualities. This makes UTZ CERTIFIED the most suitable partner to help Douwe Egberts achieve its ambitions in the European market.

The UTZ CERTIFIED quality mark provides consumers with clear information as to the origins of their coffee and the conditions under which it was grown. For coffee farmers, UTZ CERTIFIED means a better livelihood, providing them with access to more effective and efficient production methods that improve the quality of their coffee. As a result, the farmers get a better price for their coffee and (greater) access to the global market.

Working towards 100% sustainability
Each year, Douwe Egberts purchases a larger share of its coffee from sustainably producing organisations of farmers. Until now, UTZ certified coffee was blended with other coffee types, and had not been available as a product in its own right. The introduction of Good Origin marks the launch of Douwe Egberts’ very own 100% certified coffee label.
In addition to using 100% UTZ CERTIFIED in its Good Origin products, Douwe Egberts will continue to blend this coffee with other coffee types. As more UTZ certified coffee becomes available, the percentage of sustainably produced coffee in these blends will increase even further. Ultimately, Douwe Egberts is aiming for a situation where all its coffee is produced according to sustainable methods.
